Rob, you've hit the proverbial "nail on the head". Often the PMO is seen as the Holy Grail, an all-or-nothing decision for the company. From my experiences, the benefits of a PMO derive primarily from the competent individuals working within/for the company. To make a PMO work, there needs to be leadersip......with Vision.....where the leader knows that the stars can wait! (Beam me up Scotty)

I agree that using the right definition and terminology is very important. Not least in the UK for tax issues.

It will become increasingly important as the EC puts some more momentum into its approach over "parasubordinates". The view appears to be that the several million workers in this category across the EU are somehow desperately seeking a "real" job - to the EC that means a permanent role in a larger organisation. They appear keen to grant us employment rights whether we want them or not and to help us be recognised as "real" workers in their terms!

Watch out.

Rob,

I couldn't agree with you more. With the recent hype of social and professional networks it seems as though more people want to look as though they have many connections rather than actually nuture and grow these connections.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having a great deal of connections, but please don't use them when you need them. I think we share the same notion that you should seek to help others and find out what you can do for them. Listen and grow the relationships. Perhaps you may never 'need' to use this connection in business, but that doesn't mean a great relationship can't spur from it.

I think if these online networks are used with a good mindset they can be very empowering. However, people will always exist that are just trying to foster these relationships to try to get ahead.

(on a side note I'm actually working on trying to solve this problem with the current state of social/professional networks).

Max, thanks for the the for correction ;-)
Appreciated and corrected.

You made a good point. e.g. The 25 yr old single guy is very likely to have different priorities to the 45 year old guy with a wife and two children.

I think you mean ‘top 20 best consultancies to work for’ not '... to for for'.

Having just moved, I tend to agree with your 6 criteria, although each individual will have to make their own judgement about how much weight / priority to assign to each of the criteria, based on how much importance they have to them individually at this particular point in their life and careers.

Good thoughts Rob. I know that in business it has been popular to say that there' s no contingency plan in place so that the only thing we can do is succeed. While I like that thought, it has to be balanced with facing reality when things we try just aren't going to get off the ground.

The idea of having things in place to identify and cancel failed projects is a great idea.

I have gone through this in the past working for a pre-IPO company. I can honestly say that it cost me dearly!.. At the moment, I set standards, for example, mandatory Saturday breakfast by the beach with my wife alone!.. Tuesday night bowling with the kids... Half a day on Sunday to work around the house with the entire family contributing!.. I found few simple rules and solid hard none negotiable dates brought me much closer to the family and took off a major feeling of guilt allowed me to be more productive at work.
